It was the second week in February.
After eleven days of touring the south island by car, staying at motels, eating
dinners in nice restaurants (or enjoying John Day's home cooked venison steaks),
we began our second scheduled trek in Abel Tasman National Park on the tropical
northwest coast of the south island. We would hike to the first hut (Anchorage
Hut); the following morning our packs would be taken by water taxi
to the next hut (Awaroa Hut) while we kayaked there; the third morning we
would hike to our final destination, the visitors center at Totaranui where
we planned to take a water taxi back to the beginning.
The newspaper we're holding is a copy of The Mountain-Ear,
Nederland's weekly paper, which features a regular ad called "People Are Reading
it Everywhere." Local residents submit pictures from trips and folks are
shown all over the world "reading" the local paper. It's fun to see where
people we know have traveled. We try to contribute one or two photos each
time we go someplace. This was sent in along with one from the Milford Track.
