Hovenweep National Monument
Hovenweep National Monument Canyons of the Ancients is 164,000 acres managed by the BLM. Within that area, a few tiny pockets of land are under the supervision of the National Park Service.

Hovenweep is a Ute word meaning “deserted valley”.

This is the Cutthroat Castle, which is accessed via the same dirt road as Painted Hand. Beyond these sites, I followed the loop road thru Hovenweep and Negro Canyons. It turned out to be pretty rough going in some spots, but all very exciting.
