Hells Canyon National Recreation Area
	Hells Canyon of the Snake River lies on the border between Oregon and Idaho. This is the town of White Bird, named after a Nez Perce Indian chief. It is near the site of the first battle in the Nez Perce War of 1877, in which factions of the tribe fought for their lives on a flight for freedom, after leaving behind the sacred ancestral lands given to them in 1855.
