Apikuni Mountain was named for James Willard Schultz, a New Yorker who came to the west
in 1876 as a young man, married a Blackfeet woman, and lived with the tribe for many years.
He was given the name Apikuni meaning “Far-off White Robe.”
Schultz wrote many books about his experiences and was well renowned in his day. He became
an influential advocate for Native American rights and environmental protection.
