Cedar Tree House is an example of the more advanced pueblos on the mesa tops, where the people lived near their farms.

The Mesa Verde area was inhabited long before the cliff dwellings were built between
approximately 1100-1300. This is Cedar Tree tower and kiva from the Developmental
Pueblo period from about 750-1100. During this period, the
people transitioned from the hunting/gathering Basketmaker period (550-750) with
its primitave pithouses.
