The Mesa Verde area was inhabited long before the cliff dwellings were built between
approximately 1100-1300. This is Cedar Tree tower and kiva from the Developmental
Pueblo period from about 750-1100. During this period, the
people transitioned from the hunting/gathering Basketmaker period (550-750) with
its primitave pithouses.
Cedar Tree House is an example of the more advanced pueblos on the mesa tops,
where the people lived near their farms.
