This dwelling is on a western face of Moccasin Mesa in Soda Canyon. There are
about 600 cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde, the vast majority of which
the public is prohibited from visiting.
In 1276, a severe drought struck the region. The resources of the mesa tops were
also seriously depleted. By 1300, the people had left the area and headed south
to find new sources of water, game, firewood, and fresh farm lands. These people were
once know as the Anasazi, a Navajo word meaning “the ancient enemies.”
Modern Indians now living in the southwest object to that name in reference to
their ancestors. The preferred name for these people is Ancestral Puebloans.
