Hovenweep National Monument
Hovenweep National Monument The five principle sites of Hovenweep are located in a twenty mile radius on the Utah–Colorado border. The Square Tower Group is the most accessible. Here, in and around Little Ruin Canyon, there are numerous examples of the architectural style that makes the area so intriguing. Inhabited during the same period as the more famous Mesa Verde, the work of the skilled rock masons here remain completely unrestored.

This is the Square Tower for which this site was named. Once a full three stories tall and built on a boulder at the head of the canyon, it may have been constructed to protect the precious permanent spring located here.
