HIGHLINE LAKE
STATE PARK Ron and Sandy welcomed us again, though our time there was brief: we arrived late in the afternoon and had not much time to socialize before taking them to dinner in Fruita at El Tapatio, a good Mexican restaurant (B+ margaritas and remarkably good flan, the sign of good Mexican cooking). Before we left in the morning, we walked over to a adjoining vegetable patch where a very friendly farmer offered all the beets, turnips, and peppers we would like to take with us. Sandy and Ron said he would rather give away the produce than let it rot. We left with our vegetable bags filled to visit an old college buddy living 60 miles down the road in Delta. Thanks again, Sandy and Ron, for your friendly welcome and hospitality. We’ll try to repay the kindness when we see you in Tucson. DELTA ![]() Hughes and David Delo graduated from Antioch College in 1962. They were both transfer students, Hughes from Ventura (California) Junior College, David from Colgate, and were housed in the same dorm from the beginning. From a 1958 college photograph (a panorama black and white photo that captured the entire student body and faculty in one shot) you can see David standing directly behind Hughes, (the one with the dark glasses). While David and Hughes had shared a few beers in their undergraduate days, Hughes and Judy got married the year before Hughes graduated, moved off-campus and took up married life. (Judy delayed graduation until twelve years later from University of Toledo.) After graduation, we went our separate ways and did not remain in contact—until a phone call from David a half century later got us back together. Neither of us had changed so much that we did not recognize each other instantly. We have visited here in Nederland a couple of times and got caught up with our lives since we’d seen each other. ![]() ![]()
