GLEN CANYON and PAGE, ARIZONA

Glen Canyon Bridge
Page was named for John Page, a former head of the BLM who died just as the Glen Canyon Dam project was in its infancy. Page created as a construction town in the mid-1950s with the building of the Glen Canyon Dam, which was completed in 1963 and filled 17 years later. The Colorado River backs up nearly 200 miles creating the fourth largest man-made lake in the country. (The area of Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota is more that twice the size of Lake Powell.) The Glen Canyon Bridge crosses the Colorado River at the dam site. It was constructed in California, disassembled, hauled to Page and then reassembled at the dam site in 1959, making it possible to deliver construction equipment and goods for the town of Page.
