Montezuma Castle National Monument
Montezuma Castle Contemporaries of the Anasazi, the pre-historic Sinagua Indians inhabited this area of central Arizona from about 600-1400 AD. The civilization peaked around 1200, during which time this five-story, 20-room structure was built. Situated nearly 100 feet above the floor of the Verde Valley, it is located about 17 miles south of Sedona.

As frequently occurred, the structure was misidentified by early U.S. surveyors, who mistakenly assumed the ruins were associated with the Aztec Empire of south-central Mexico.
