HUGHES AND JUDY LOOK BACK AT 2011

The past year was splendid for us in many ways, mostly because we maintained our health, we kept active, and we visited several parts of the world that were new to us. We kept our schedule of town volunteer activities throughout the year: Visitors Center, Carousel of Happiness, and Backdoor Theater; and we continued to be active members in local clubs and social groups: Bolder Roadrunners, Purple Runners, Mystery Book Club, McGinty’s Wake, and the Cutthroat Duplicate Bridge Group. We have noted most of our activities on our online newsletters, but following are highlights of 2011:

January: We spent a week in Florida visiting Judy’s cousin in Davie, and Toledo friends in Destin.

February–March: We lived four weeks at Desert Trails RV Park outside of Tucson (see photo on right). This warm weather summer camp for adults is growing into an annual getaway where we can take the dogs with us on vacation. We’re looking forward to retuning in 2012.

April: We returned to Arizona (Sedona) without the dogs for a week of hiking, biking, geocaching, and relaxing in this beautiful red rock country.

May: Our Massachusetts niece, Lisa, came for a family visit and some geocaching in our area. Judy won her age group in the Bolder-Boulder 10K (we’ve lost count of how many wins that makes).

June: We spent a fabulous month camping in the Canadian Rockies and western British Columbia.

July–August: Judy’s mixed masters relay team was first in their age group in the 24- hour 200-mile Rocky Mountain Relay (from Colorado Springs to Crested Butte). We had our first wildland fire scare when a half acre of our property, thankfully well away from the house, caught fire from a delayed lightening strike. Trish and Dick Sanders brought their Shanghai Rummy A-Game from Toledo. Judy won another case of Avery Beer at the “4 on the 4th” run in Boulder and Hughes played trombone again in the Nederland 4th of July parade. Judy hiked throughout the summer with her ladies group. We bought a Toyota Rav4 that we can tow behind the RV when going on long term camping trips.

September: We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. Lots of tree cutting and log splitting in advance of winter. Judy won another trophy in the annual Neder-Nederland 5K.

October: Two weeks in central Europe was our anniversary “reward trip.”

November: Our guest at Thanksgiving was college friend artist-writer David Delo who joined Michael and Cindy here.

December: After going for the past 15 years, we spent our last week at our original time share in Puerto Vallarta enjoying a true vacation and seven great restaurants. Our daughter Debra, Dan, Griffin, and Julia visited to celebrate Christmas with us early.

All our very best to you for a rewarding, healthy, and joyous 2012.
